Los Cerrillos: Finca El Peral Reserva 2007

In France, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Carmenere are often blended to produce Bordeaux wines. Here in Ontario, and in California, similar blends are created but called Meritage. In the UK such blends are often referred to as Claret.

The art of blending various varietals to create tailored blend wines has a deep history and has extended to all wine-making corners of the world, including Argentina.

Winemaker Juan Pablo Michelini of Bodega Los Cerrillos has created an award-winning blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Merlot.  In this blend, Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and body, Malbec imparts fruit-forwardness, and Merlot adds a little gentle finesse.

*Tasting Notes:

Aromas of fruity black cherry, wild herbs and soft oak. Well-made and a very good price for its full body, complexity, and smooth integration of other components of acidic core and tannins. Shows its premium Argentine refinement and quality. Can be enjoyed now but should improve with age. Fabulous paired with grilled or barbecued red meats.

Bodega Los Cerrillos: Uruco 2007 – a sophisticated Argentine blend

While many wine growers in Argentina are creating outstanding single varietals (well beyond Malbec), not as many are focusing on the art of blending. Bodega Los Cerrillos‘ most premium selection, the Uruco 2007 blend, is an shining example of a sophisticated Argentine blend.

Born in the beautiful Uco Valley in the Tupungato region of Mendoza province, Uruco is a testament to the quality and unique character of Bordeaux-inspired blends coming from new world regions.

While the dark fruit nature and complexity of this wine is undoubtedly due in part to its Malbec emphasis, we can also appreciate the added body lent by Cabernet Sauvignon, and the more gentle fruit finesse imparted by the inclusion of Merlot. By blending these varietals (that each have their own distinct characteristics), the result is artisan winemaker Juan Pablo Michelini’s carefully crafted, and elegant Uruco.

*Tasting Notes:
A black wine with aromas of tart sour cherry and blackberry. Grapes are hand picked from vines that are more than seventy years old, a common occurrence in Mendoza. The fruitiness of the Merlot grape makes a good blend and appeals to those who find Cabernet Sauvignon more tannic. Malbec, the signature grape of Mendoza, adds to the complexity and the excellent long finish adds to the enjoyment. This wine can be laid down and still enjoyed in four to five years.
