Afternoon Flight to Mendoza Argentine wine tasting ontario

We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day on Saturday. Over 40 Woodside Wine Appreciation Club members came together for a lovely afternoon “flight to Mendoza” to taste a wide range of varietals and blends from six artisan Argentine wineries. We went well beyond malbec, and were very pleasantly surprised by some of the wines we explored. Some highlights include:

Bodega Los Cerrillos: It wasn’t just the hot, sunny weather that made the El Peral Chardonnay 2006 a big hit. The fresh, citrusy bouquet leapt from the glass, and the crisp, lively summer white won over many tasters. Even those who call themselves “devout red drinkers” were smiling as they sipped.

Pulmary Estates: Diana Santolini put a lot of love into making just 1000 bottles of the very special Donaria Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. This fabulous Argentine red is an outstanding, shining example of the quality and finesse a small-production, organic wine can achieve.

Tempus Alba: From the intriguing eucalyptus on the nose, to the complexity on the palate, and to the incredibly harmonious overall balance, the Tempus Albs Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 was very popular amongst club members. Every wine we try from this winemaker is consistently outstanding.

Serrera: Club members got to experience a very special treat in the Serrera Gran Guarda 2006. Created from exceptionally high-quality grapes of the Lalunta terroirs in Mendoza, this premium malbec reminded us why Argentine wines are reaching new heights around the world, and quickly becoming the next big thing in Ontario.

Hacienda del Plata: The Arriero Reserve Syrah 2004 won the admiration of those that have a palate for a big, red, smokey wine with a deep, smooth, velvety texture and a soft but lengthy finish reminiscent of black currant and cherries… yum!

Clos de Chacras: Perhaps the most pleasant surprise, and possibly the most talked about wine of the day was the Cavas de Crianza Merlot. With playful aromas of spice and fruit, medium bodied, with a pleasant, sweet attack and mellow tannics, this wine was very approachable and truly enjoyable.

Thanks to all of you that came out and participated. We had a great time, and hope to see you again soon. A special “gracias” to Leslie, our club coordinator and empanadas-maker extraordinaire. We also wish to recognize Marie, Robin, Alejandra and Stephan, whose help with this event was appreciated greatly.

All of the above wines are available exclusively in Ontario via Spectrum Wines, and are not available in the LCBO. Stay tuned for information on our next event, coming soon.
